If you’ve glanced at social media lately, you’ll have seen it — wellness events are everywhere. Ice baths, floor-based yoga marathons, intense workshops, packed schedules.
And while that’s wonderful in many ways… I kept noticing something.
Where were the events specifically created for the over 60s?
As a functional fitness practitioner working almost exclusively with this age group, I could see the gap clearly. So many events are heavily floor-based, high intensity, or designed with younger bodies in mind. And the moment something requires getting up and down off the floor repeatedly, you’ve already excluded a huge proportion of people.
That didn’t sit right with me.
So I decided to change it.
Three outstanding events later — and preparing for my fourth — I can confidently say there is not just a need, but a deep hunger for spaces designed thoughtfully and respectfully for this stage of life.
Why These Events Are Different
My events are built around three pillars:
Movement. Education. Connection.
All delivered in a way that is energising, inclusive and genuinely enjoyable.
They are not about pushing limits for the sake of it.
They are about building strength for life.
They are not about overwhelming people with complicated nutrition advice.
They are about simplifying it so it works at home.
They are not about sitting passively listening all day.
They are about participating, laughing, learning and leaving lighter than you arrived.
The Power of Movement as We Age
Movement is not optional as we get older — it is essential.
After 60, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass (sarcopenia), balance can decline, bone density reduces and confidence in movement often dips. But here’s the empowering part:
It is never too late to improve strength, mobility and balance.
Functional fitness — the foundation of my work — focuses on movements that matter in real life:
- Standing from a chair
- Reaching overhead
- Lifting groceries
- Climbing stairs
- Maintaining balance on uneven ground
We include:
- Functional fitness sessions
- Chair yoga (accessible and adaptable)
- Gentle mobility work
No one is left behind.
No one feels exposed.
Everyone moves at their own pace.
And something beautiful happens in the room — confidence grows. Shoulders lift. Smiles widen. People realise they are far more capable than they thought.
Nutrition: Simplified, Practical, Doable
As a nutritionist, I see daily how many people simply haven’t been given clear, practical guidance around food.
Not fads.
Not restrictive plans.
Not complicated supplements.
Just simple, balanced meals that support:
- Muscle maintenance
- Bone health
- Energy levels
- Immune function
- Gut health
At every event, food demos and nutrition talks are a core element. I break nutrition down into manageable steps — meals that can be easily recreated at home.
Because knowledge is powerful… but only if it’s usable.
At our upcoming event, I’m delighted to welcome a dietitian who will be speaking about urinary tract infections — an important but often under-discussed topic in this age group. Education like this empowers people to advocate for their own health.
The Magic Ingredient: Connection
If movement is medicine, connection is nourishment.
Loneliness and isolation can increase with age — retirement, loss of loved ones, changes in social circles. And yet human connection remains one of the strongest predictors of wellbeing and longevity.
That’s why connection is intentionally woven through the entire day.
Workshops and speakers held in previous events include:
- We Are Art Club for mindful art workshops
- Deborah of Be Well with Deborah for laughter yoga (the sound of that room is unforgettable!)
- Fintan McDermot for Tai Chi
- Geraldine O’Brien of West Cork Massage and reflexology for guided self massage
- Liz O’Sullivan HSE Physiotherapist- Better Bones and Better Balance
- Dr. Anne-Marie McGinley- The importance of check ups and connection
- Christina Foley- Physiotherapist- Osteoporosis and falls prevention
- Fleur Hindley- The power of food and supplements as we age
People arrive unsure of what to expect.
They leave having:
- Shared conversations
- Tried something new
- Laughed deeply
- Learned something practical
- Eaten a beautiful lunch served by the hotel
- And often made new friends
The energy in the room is genuinely magical. It’s not something you can manufacture — it happens when people feel seen, included and capable.
Why This Matters
Aging is not about shrinking.
It’s about adapting wisely.
Events like these send a powerful message:
You are not done.
You are not fragile.
You are not invisible.
You are strong.
You are capable.
You are still growing.
And you deserve spaces designed specifically for you.
As I prepare for our fourth event, I feel even more certain that this work matters deeply. When people leave saying, “I didn’t know I could do that,” or “I feel lighter,” or “When is the next one?” — that tells me everything.
Wellness should not exclude.
It should include.
And that’s exactly what these events are built to do.
If you would like to join us at our next Over 60s Wellness Event, I would love to welcome you into the room. Come curious. Leave empowered.
